Microsoft Private Cloud Evaluation Software

“A Microsoft private cloud dramatically changes the way your business produces and consumes IT services by creating a layer of abstraction over your pooled IT resources. This allows your datacenter to offer true infrastructure service capability as well as optimally managed application services.

Microsoft private cloud solutions are built on System Center and Windows Server.”

HP Software Delivery Repository for VMware – Image Builder, VUM, ESXCLI and ESXi 5

“Overview

Welcome to the HP vibsdepot. This site at http://vibsdepot.hp.com provides our customers and partners with online access to the HP developed VMware® Bundles for use with VMware® vSphere 5.0 Image Builder, Update Manager (VUM) and ESXCLI. It is assumed you are familiar with these applications and command line utilities and if needed should refer to the VMware® vSphere 5.0 documentation along with VMware.com for further information.

The HP bundles that are provided on the vibsdepot are an important solution for the management and configuration of HP Industry Standard Servers and are already integrated in the HP Customized VMware® ESXi 5.0 image available at https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM09.

For a list of HP supplied drivers and versions used in HP Customized VMware® images reference the list at http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/vmware-esxi/driver_version.html.

You can also easily install the HP Bundles from vibsdepot on your VMware® ESXi 5.0 image as offline bundle ZIP files with ESXCLI and VUM or integrated as part of your customized ESXi 5.0 image creation with Image Builder.

Use Cases:

  • Directly add the vibsdepot with Image Builder PowerCLI command "Add-EsxSoftwareDepot http://vibsdepot.hp.com" for all the bundles or with any specific bundle subdirectory by appending the respective <bundle-directory> to the URL
  • Directly connect VUM to "http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml"or for a specific bundle subdirectory via http://vibsdepot.hp.com/<bundle-directory>/index.xml
  • Download (or copy)"http://vibsdepot.hp.com/" for all the bundles or any specific bundle subdirectory to your local VMware® depot
  • Download (or copy)"http://vibsdepot.hp.com/" or a specific <bundle-directory>/<offline-bundle-name>.zip to you local management console or to the host and use the ESXCLI command”

Microsoft Active Directory Topology Diagrammer Tool

“With the Active Directory Topology Diagrammer tool, you can read your Active Directory structure through LDAP. The Active Directory Topology Diagrammer tool automates Microsoft Office Visio to draw a diagram of the Active Directory Domain topology, your Active Directory Site topology, your OU structure, your DFS-R topology or your current Exchange 20XX Server Organization. With the Active Directory Topology Diagrammer tool, you can also draw partial Information from your Active Directory, like only one Domain or one site. The objects are linked together, and arranged in a reasonable layout that you can later interactively work with the objects in Microsoft Office Visio.”

You can download the Microsoft Active Directory Topology Diagrammer tool here.

New Free Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer

“You can run the Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer both on already deployed desktops as well as on reference machines (templates / golden images), where our best practice is to apply the optimizations to the latter. No matter where you run the Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer it’s important to always test the optimizations applied by the Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer in a test environment! Even though we have put a lot of work into creating the list of optimizations, not all optimizations will make equal sense for everybody. For example, if you use Windows Search regularly, you might not want to disable the service. Finally, it should go without saying that the Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer should be run as an administrator.”

You can download Quest vWorkspace Desktop Optimizer here.

Microsoft File Server Capacity Tool - v1.2

“File server capacity planning and performance troubleshooting are critical aspects of high-level network administration. File server capacity planning tools can be valuable in choosing new hardware for purchase, identifying the capacity of existing hardware, locating existing bottlenecks, and planning for resource expansion in advance of resource exhaustion.

The throughput capacity of a file server can be expressed either as the maximum number of operations per second or a maximum number of users supported by the configuration. These values are influenced by several factors, some of which include processor speed, available memory, disk speed, network throughput and latency, and the speed with which SMB requests are processed.

This release is an updated release to v1.0. It includes support of File Server in the Windows Clustering configuration. Windows Clustering allows system to be built with redundancy, which provides high availability to tolerate hardware failures. With a two node clustering, you could setup more than one virtual file server instance, and have FSCT clients run load against all the instances. In this release, a new section “Running FSCT against a singleton Windows Cluster” will describe the setup and steps for running against a Windows Cluster.”

You can download the Microsoft File Server Capacity Tool here (64b) and here (32b).

ADMT can also perform security translation (to migrate local user profiles) when performing inter-forest migrations.

    System Requirements

    • Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2008 R2
    • ADMT can be installed on any computer capable of running the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system, unless they are Read-Only domain controllers or in a Server Core configuration.
    • Target domain: The target domain must be running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Source domain: The source domain must be running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2
    • The ADMT agent, installed by ADMT on computers in the source domains, can operate on computers running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2.”

    PHD Virtual Patch Downloader

“Patch Downloader simplifies the task of downloading patches for various ESX versions by automating the task. If a user does not want to, or cannot, use Update Manager (because they do not have a license or do not have internet access from the ESX/VC hosts) they must download patches manually from the VMware website through a Java Download manager. It's easy to miss a patch, and painfully slow to find and select the ones you want. These downloaded patches go on an HTTP or FTP repository, or are copied direct to each host over SSH, and the esxupdate utility is used to patch the ESX host.

With Patch Downloader, you just open the app, select the version of ESX from the drop down, and select a file repository (folder, drive map, SMB share, etc.) where you want to download the patches. It lists all of the available ESX patches as well as information about each including description and severity of the problem it corrects and the impact to the VM/Host. The patch grid can be sorted by column so it's easy to bring all the CRITICAL patches to the top, for example. When you click download, it will download all of the VMware ESX patches you select to the repository, but skip any that are already there – simplifying your ESX patch management by keeping your ESX patch repository up to date.”
