Microsoft Hotmail & MSN Accounts with Office 2010 - POP3/SMTP Settings

I was very disappointed with the Outlook connector not working properly after upgrading to Office 2010 so I uninstalled it, researched the settings for the pop3 and smtp services, tested them, and now everything is back to normal again:

Incoming Server

  • pop3.live.com
  • Username: username@hotmail.com - same as your full e-mail address/it can also be live.com or msn.com
  • Password required
  • There is no need to check SPA - Secure Password Authorization
  • Pop3 port is 995
  • Encryption: SSL required

Outgoing Server

  • smtp.live.com
  • Outgoing Server Authentication: yes
  • Outgoing server is configured to use the same settings as the incoming server
  • Port is 25 or 587 - the preferred outgoing port is 587 instead of 25 because most of the ISPs will block port 25 by default
  • Encryption: SSL, TLS or Auto - SSL is recommended for Windows Live Mail, Outlook 2003, iPhone/iPod Touch, Outlook Express and Vista's Windows Mail - TLS/Auto for Outlook 2007/2010

False Positive Detection of w32/wecorl.a in 5958 DAT (McAfee)

Here is the procedure I used today to fix the issue with the false positive detection of w32/wecorl.a in 5958 DAT:

  • Download the EXTRA.ZIP file (bottom of the page) and extract the EXTRA.DAT file to a temporary location
  • Click Start, Run, type services.msc and click OK
  • Right-click the McAfee McShield service and select Stop
  • Copy (*1) the EXTRA.DAT file (or above like the now released 5959) to c:\program files\common files\mcafee\engine
  • Reboot in Safe Mode
  • Replace (*1) the current svchost.exe (c:\windows\system32\) with the copy stored in c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\svchost.exe or c:\windows\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe
  • Reboot and Test the system (*2)

(*1) If Windows does not allow you to copy the file, start the system with a bootable cd (like the Hiren’s boot cd) and then perform the copy operation

(*2) If McAfee fails to start consider re-installing the application

Additional information from McAfee can be found here and here.
