Transferring the FSMO Roles (Part 4)

Transferring the Forest-Wide FSMO roles:

To find out who currently holds the Schema Master FSMO Role and transfer it:
  • Register the schmmgmt.dll library by clicking Start, Run and typing “regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll

  • Press OK after receiving the success confirmation

  • Open a MMC console by typing "mmc" in the Run box
  • On the Console menu, select "Add/Remove Snap-in"
  • Choose "Add" and select "Active Directory Schema"

  • Press "Add", "Close" and click OK
  • Select the AD Schema icon and after it is loaded right-click it and select "Operations Masters"

  • Click “Change” if the name of the new server that will have the role is the one that you want and confirm the change

  • If that is not the case, cancel the operation, click one more time on your AD Schema icon and then choose “Connect to Domain Controller”
  • Now you just need to specify the DC you expect to hold the FSMO role and follow the above mentioned procedure

I would like to mention that you need to be a member of the Schema Administrators group in order to transfer the Schema Master role. Also, remember that you can check who has the FSMO Roles by running "netdom query fsmo" at a command prompt.
